The choir was founded in 1989 and Helene Stureborg has been its conductor since 2002. SMK has over the years achieved recognition through the estimated concerts and competition successes and regularly receives invitations to participate in master classes and international conventions. Among their distinctions and awards are: first prize and conductor’s prize at Marktoberdorf International Choral Competition (2009), concert tour in Scandinavia with Andrea Bocelli and  Ave Maria CD production, 2nd prize and special prize at Cork International Choral Competition (2011), first prize and Grand Prix at Maribor International Choral Competiton (2013), 2nd prize at Debrecen International Choral Competition (2014), Andrea Bocelli Tour in Stockholm (2017).

Helene Stureborg, graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Church Music (1990), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Choral Conducting at the Royal University College of Music (1993). She also has an Educational qualification. Since1990 she has been working as a conductor and music teacher at the Stockholm ‘s Musikgymnasium. In the period 1994-2002 she wasthe conductor of Kongl Teknologk?ren at the Royal Institute of Technology. Then she became the conductor of the Stockholms Musikgymnasium Chamber Choir. The choir has won several prices at competitions abroad and is highly respected. In 2011 she started her own ensemble Helene Stureborgs Chamber Choir.

Between 1996 and 2014 she taught choral conducting at the Royal University College of Music and in 2014 she was appointed a member of the Artistic Council of Statens Musikverk. She is also engaged in rehearsing the Swedish Radio Choir and has had several productions with the ensemble. Helene is frequently invited as conducting teacher and choral pedagogue at varying courses.
